My Content 90 Days Ago Wasn’t As Good As I Thought It Was — Here’s How To Fix Yours

My first rude awakening from running my 90-day #ContentStorm experiment was that my content wasn’t as amazing as I thought it was.

How do I know that?

Because the content I’d been laboring over — and creating long-form blogs out of — wasn’t taking off at all.

I Learned This By Jumping Onto Ship 30 for 30!

I was equating two things with making my content “great” back then:

  • I spent a lot of time on it
  • I spent a lot of effort on it
  • Besides, I was a trained journalist and had been writing professionally (for others) since 2004! I was a good writer, dammit! Why weren’t readers clogging up my Google Analytics with metrics?

I Wasn’t Writing What People Wanted

It’s interesting to look in your analytics and see what content performed well and what flopped.

I learned the distinction between writing what I wanted to write and writing what others wanted me to write.

The former serves my ego, the latter serves others.

We’re Here To Serve Others — That’s What Makes Good Content!

You have to give value to get value in return. (This is a thing in the lightning community called #V4V).

But this is also an age-old basic of life.

No one is on the Internet to read good writing; that’s what books are for. People are here to be entertained and informed.

You Must Entertain & Inform Quickly

Attention spans are shorter than ever. If you read this far, you either found value in this atomic essay so far — or it entertained you.

Remember you’re competing for attention.

Is your content worth stopping the scroll for?
